Tablecloth Size Comparison Calculator
Enter your table size, then compare 2–3 tablecloth sizes. See each cloth’s drop (how far it hangs over the edge) or where it leaves the tabletop uncovered.
Use the selected unit for every measurement. For fractions, enter a decimal, such as 72.5. A comma also means a decimal here, so 1,000 is read as 1, not one thousand.
Try an example replaces the current shape’s measurements. Clear measurements clears both shapes.
Your comparison
These estimates assume the cloth is centered, with its longer edges along the table’s longer edges for rectangles. Fabric may hang differently, especially at corners. The tool does not check whether the cloth reaches the floor.
How to measure your table and tablecloth
Measure the tabletop edge to edge. For a rectangle, enter length and width in either order; we align the longer edges. For a round table, measure the diameter across the center. Use finished cloth dimensions, not fabric-cut dimensions, and use the same unit for every size.
Use the cloth’s finished size. The calculation does not adjust for hemming, shrinkage, stretch, seams, thick or padded table edges, or small differences in the manufactured size. It cannot show exact coverage at rounded table corners. If the cloth’s pattern requires you to turn it the other way, these results will not describe that placement.
How tablecloth drop is calculated
We display rectangular dimensions as length × width, with the longer dimension first. Cloth length is aligned with table length.
- Each long side
- (cloth width − table width) ÷ 2
- Each end (short side)
- (cloth length − table length) ÷ 2
- All around a round table
- (cloth diameter − table diameter) ÷ 2
Rectangular example: a 90 × 60 in cloth on a 72 × 30 in table gives (60 − 30) ÷ 2 = 15 in on each long side and (90 − 72) ÷ 2 = 9 in at each end.
Round example: a 90 in diameter cloth on a 60 in diameter table gives (90 − 60) ÷ 2 = 15 in all around.
Choosing between sizes
More drop means more fabric beyond the edge. Choose the amount that suits your seating and preferred look. For floor-length planning, measure table height separately; rectangular corners may hang differently from the straight sides.
A drop of 0 means the cloth reaches the table’s edge without hanging over. If the cloth is too small, the result tells you how much tabletop is left uncovered at each edge, measured straight in from that edge. For a round table, this is the width of the uncovered ring. A rectangular cloth can hang over the long sides while falling short at the ends, so check both measurements. Choose the size that gives you the coverage and drop you want.
Frequently asked questions
How do I find the drop?
Subtract the table dimension from the matching cloth dimension, then divide by two. Each result describes the fabric beyond one edge of a centered tablecloth.
Why are rectangular side and end drops different?
A cloth may have more extra fabric along one direction than the other. Extra width hangs over the long sides; extra length hangs over the ends.
What if the cloth is smaller than the table?
Part of the tabletop remains exposed. A 54 in round cloth on a 60 in round table leaves a 3 in wide uncovered ring. It does not fully cover the tabletop.
Does the order of dimensions matter?
No. Enter length and width in either order. We show the longer measurement first and assume the cloth’s longer edges run along the table’s longer edges. For a square table or cloth, enter the same measurement twice.
Will it reach the floor?
The tool does not check whether the cloth reaches the floor. Measure your table’s height separately and compare it with the drop. Fabric can hang differently at the corners.
Can I use oval tables or a round cloth on a rectangle?
No. Only rectangular cloths on rectangular tables, and round cloths on round tables, are modeled.
Does it allow for shrinkage or hemming?
No. Enter the expected finished dimensions.
