Whole-Pack Purchase Comparator

A lower price per item can still mean spending more when you must buy whole packs. Compare the cost to buy enough of the same item, the unit price, and the leftovers.

Compare whole packs

Compare packs of items you could use for the same purpose. Prices are in US dollars; tax and shipping are not included.

Enter a whole number from 1 to 1,000,000, without commas.

Comparison results

Price per item includes every item you buy, even the leftovers. It is shown to up to four decimal places; comparisons use the amounts before rounding. All prices are in US dollars, before tax and shipping.

Understand the comparison

Lowest purchase cost shows which offer costs the least to buy enough items. Lowest unit price shows which offer costs the least per item in a full pack. These may be different offers. Fewest leftovers shows which leaves you with the fewest extra items. Those extras may be useful later, so consider both what you’ll spend now and what you’ll use.

Packs required tells you how many whole packs to buy to cover the quantity you need. Total items purchased includes any leftovers. If offers tie for the lowest cost, lowest unit price, or fewest leftovers, each gets the matching label. Offers stay in the order you entered them.

Example: buy enough for 50 items

Offer A contains 48 items for $12.00. You need 2 packs, purchasing 96 items for $24.00, with 46 left over. The unit price is $0.25.

Offer B contains 30 items for $9.00. You need 2 packs, purchasing 60 items for $18.00, with 10 left over. The unit price is $0.30.

Offer B costs $6.00 less to buy enough items, even though Offer A has a lower price per item. Offer B also has fewer leftovers.

Method and limitations

Packs required = required quantity ÷ items per pack, rounded up. Total items purchased = packs required × items per pack. Leftovers = total items purchased − required quantity. Total purchase cost = packs required × price per pack. Price per item = price per pack ÷ items per pack.

Purchase totals are calculated in cents, and prices per item are compared before rounding. Compare items that would work equally well for your needs; the calculator does not judge quality or suitability. Each offer is calculated on its own, without combining different pack sizes.

Enter the pack prices yourself; the calculator does not check prices or stock. It compares items counted individually, not amounts measured by weight, volume, or length. It does not calculate tax, shipping, discounts, membership or subscription pricing, or currency conversions. Calculations run in your browser, and comparisons are not saved.

Frequently asked questions

How many packs should I buy?

Divide the number of items needed by the items in one pack and round up to the next whole pack. An exact multiple needs no extra pack.

Why can a lower unit price cost more?

A pack can cost less per item but leave you buying more items than you need. Compare the total purchase cost to see what you’ll actually spend.

Are leftovers a bad thing?

Not necessarily. Leftovers may be useful later. The calculator reports their count without assigning them a value.

What if a pack is larger than my requirement?

You need one pack. Everything beyond your required quantity is counted as leftovers.

Can I compare different stores?

Yes. Enter equivalent items and the pack prices yourself. Optional labels can help identify offers, but this tool does not look up store prices or stock.

Are tax and shipping included?

No. Results use the entered pack prices only, before tax and shipping.

What happens when offers tie?

If offers tie for the lowest purchase cost, lowest unit price, or fewest leftovers, each gets that label. Offers with the same purchase cost can still have different prices per item or leftovers. Choose based on what matters most to you.
